Understanding Tread Wear and Safety

Tyre tread plays a crucial role in maintaining traction between your vehicle and the road. The grooves and channels in the tread are designed to disperse water, maintain grip and provide stability during braking and cornering...

Reading the Road Through Your Tyres: Understanding Tread Wear and Safety

As tyres wear over time, the depth of the tread gradually decreases. When tread becomes too shallow, the tyre loses its ability to effectively channel water away from the contact patch. This increases the risk of losing traction and tyre grip, particularly on wet roads.

Tread Carefully With Tyres...

In Australia, tyres must maintain a minimum tread depth to remain roadworthy. However, many safety experts recommend replacing tyres before they reach this minimum, as braking performance begins to decline well before the legal limit.

Tread wear patterns can also reveal important information about the condition of your vehicle. Uneven wear across the tyre surface often indicates mechanical issues such as misalignment, worn suspension components or incorrect tyre pressure.

For example, excessive wear on the outer edges of the tyre may indicate underinflation, while excessive wear in the centre may suggest overinflation. Feathered edges or irregular patterns can indicate alignment problems that should be corrected to prevent further damage.

Don't Get Out Of Your Depth

Regular tyre inspections allow these issues to be detected early. Technicians examine tread depth, wear patterns and the overall condition of the tyre to ensure it remains safe to use.

Maintaining proper tread depth not only improves safety but also enhances driving confidence. Adequate tread ensures the tyre can grip the road during braking and cornering while maintaining stability in wet conditions.

Including tyre inspections as part of routine vehicle servicing helps ensure that worn tyres are identified before they become a safety concern. At Urangan Service Centre, tyre checks form an important part of keeping vehicles in Urangan safe and reliable.
